300: 300 tells the epic tale of the Battle of Thempylae. The Persians have come by the thousands to take over Greece. When asked to simply give up, and receive power and riches, the Spartan leader refuses the offer. Instead, he and 300 of his best men stood against the whole of Xerxes army, and kill thousands before finally being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the attackers.
Above and Beyond: Above and Beyond is a gripping recount of the story of the men who dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima. The movie puts the burden of what they did in perspective though the eyes of these men. Stars Robert Taylor, Eleanor Parker, James Whitmore, and Jim Backus. (1952 Military)
The Rookie (1990): Veteran detective Nick Pulovska, working in the auto theft division, has discovered German crime boss Strom is heading a large auto theft ring. In attempts to capture Strom, Nick’s partner is killed. The case is transferred to the homicide division. He is taken off the case, and given a new partner. He disobeys orders and he and his new partner are out to finish what Nick had started.
Cry the Beloved Country: Easy going back country pastor voyages to Johannesburg looking for his child, when destiny links his road with that of a prosperous, bigoted white landowner. This heart rending tale journals the racial divisiveness at its roots in South Africa, without resorting to preaching. Cast includes Canada Lee, Charles Carson, Sidney Poitier, Geoffrey Eager, Reginald Ngeabo, and Joyce Carey. (111 minutes, 1951)
Manny and Lo: An orphaned 11 year old Manny Jahanssan and her more ignorant sixteen-year-old sis La palladina rest in model homes and drive an old station wagon. Lo is pregnant, so they abduct prissy Place to help with the delivery when hiding out in a woodsy lodge. Prudent, hot comedy-tirade is crisp and spontaneous; a notable debut for author-director Krueger. Cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Aieksa Palladina, Mary Kay Place, Paul Guilfayle, Glenn Fitzgerald, and Novella Nelson. (97 minutes, 1996)
Far and Away: Scrappy, mud-meager Irish occupant farmer hooks up, in doubtful style, with the comparably feisty baby girl of a prosperous landowner, and together they cruise for America to seek their final fate in the 1893 Oklahoma land hurry. Superlative automobile for Tom and Nicole, who are both attractive and involving; complication is a drastic absence of tale to fill the eases between quarrel scenes. Cast includes Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Thomas Gibson, Robert Prosky, Barbara Babcock, Cohn Meaney, and Rance Howard. (140 minutes, 1992)
Everest: Astonishing images of climbing Mount Everest. An IMAX crew ascends the peak in May of 1996. The IMAX team succeeded, but eight climbers from other teams died. The IMAX team assisted in rescues before finishing their ascent.
Presumed Innocent: D.A. Rusty Sabich has been accused of murder. His former lover, and co worker in the D.A.’s Office, has been murdered, and the evidence points toward him. He now must figure out just whom the murderer really is to prove his innocence.
